I have added a Google based search facility to the left hand menu, this should hopefully make it easier to navigate the site.

New Tyres

March 20, 2011

Spring is pretty much here and the SRX needs an MOT. The rear tyre is just legal and whilst the front is usable in the centre, the shoulders have pretty much had it. I ordered a new set of BT45′s back in the Autumn but it has taken me six months to get round to fitting them.

Bearing removal

March 2, 2011

After heating the cases up in an oven the bearings and crankshaft can easily be removed from the cases. Some of the bearings are a little noisy so will be replaced.

Closer inspection of the cases revealed some damage to the engine case where one of the 6mm bolts holding the camchain tunnel down. I’m not sure what I am going to do about this .

Splitting the cases

February 10, 2011
The oil pump looks like it been stripped before, the surfaces have some marks but its in pretty good condition so will be re-used.
The casing bolts proved to be stubborn but they eventually relented. I then had to use a makeshift puller on the crank to split the cases, once they were apart I was presented with an excess of Blue Hylomar and a number of bits of silicon sealant floating around inside the cases.
The gearbox is ok, the only damage being the output shaft which has been damaged by the drive sprocket moving around, and 5th gear has some minor pitting, I’ve seen a lot worse.
I now need to get my oven sorted so I can remove the crank and drop the bearings out to check them. In the past I have used the oven in the kitchen and had a lot of grief from my wife about the smell, seems fair, which is why I now have my own oven.

Flywheel and Clutch

February 9, 2011

The flywheel is now off, as usual the retaining nut took quite a lot of persuading to loosen, but the air gun won the day in the end. Once the nut is loose I leave it covering the end of the crankshaft to ensure the crank isnt damaged whilst using the puller. Removal of the flywheel using the puller was the usual tighten -> mallet -> tighten -> mallet (continue) until it was released from the taper. After removing the camchain tensioner and camchain attention was moved to the other side.

Again the primary drive, balancer shaft, and clutch nuts surrendered
easily to the air gun.

When the clutch was stripped it was clear one of the posts had been broken off at some point and subsequently bodged, I have a few spare baskets so this wont be too much of a problem.

The oil pump looks very clean compared to the inside of the cases, which are covered in a black residue, so fingers crossed it may well be in good condition.

Engine Strip

February 5, 2011
I have had this SRX (1JK) engine sitting under my bench for a couple of years now. It was bought as a job lot with a pair of Keihin CR33 carbs and was pretty cheap. The engine used to be fitted to a track day bike, the top end had been stripped and the piston had obviously seized.

The plan is to strip it down to see if anything is usable. My guess is the 5th gear and the oil pump will both be duff. Going by the excess of blue Hylomar the engine has been stripped before, there are a number of stripped threads, the gear change shaft splines are rounded off and it generally looks a bit rough.

After getting rid of the worst of the grime, I have mounted the engine in a home made engine cradle ready for disassembly.

I have been looking to swap the front master cylinder on the SRX for a while. The master cylinder previously fitted (left) came from a DRZ400 and had a 12mm bore. Whilst the front brake was pretty sharp the travel was just a little to long, sometimes giving the impression it needed bleeding.I found a14mm replacement (right) from a box of SRX bits I bought back in the summer. I havent ridden the bike yet but the lever feels firmer and more predictable.
